In the wake of their debut EP, Rites and Ritual, Toronto dark post-punks Traitrs quickly return to the studio to record a follow up.
"As soon as we finished recording Rites and Ritual we started writing new demos," says singer/guitarist Shawn Tucker. "We talked about many elements we wanted to try exploring after R&R without losing what we've become but at the same time expanding and developing our sound. A major theme on Speak In Tongues is illness, and death. Early on I began reading old stories, watching documentaries and looking into articles on old asylums and the practices on the residents. Topeka, Danvers, Bedlam and countless others. The more I submerged myself in this world, the writing became more and more brutal and horrifying. Speak in Tongues was inspired by how darkly laced humanity is. A politically apocalyptic way of watching the decimation of the planet and ourselves. "
For Speaking in Tongues the band once again enlisted Toronto producer Josh Korody (Dilly Dally, Beliefs, Moon King, Fucked Up), and began working with him during sessions at his Candle Studios. With Korody's guidance the band set about expanding their sound, adding textural depth to their arrangements and weight to their rhythm section, transforming their stripped-down home recordings into a collection of propulsive, goth-influenced post-punk that immediately recalls acts like Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus and Pornography-era Cure.

Fun, bright post-punk that emulates the bands I grew up with so well that I honestly had to check and make sure the album wasn't a re-release from 1984. So glad this came up in my recommended feed. modestwriggles
